MATTHEW CARROLL
PHOTOGRAPHER
"Photographers deal in things which are continually vanishing and when they have vanished there is no contrivance on earth which can make them come back again... Memory is very important... You have to be sure that you haven't left any holes, that you've captured everything, because afterwards it will be too late."
HENRI CARTIER-BRESSON
I spent the first fourteen years of my life growing up in both the UK, and in Guatemala. Growing up overseas and having had the opportunity to also spend a significant amount of time in mainland China and Hong Kong, not only served to shape me as a person, but has also aided my creative eye and the way I sees the world. More importantly, my travels have given me a passion and interest for people. This is what lies at the root my love for photographing weddings. Ultimately, every wedding is about people: the love between two individuals and the gathering of their families and friends. The interactions and the emotions that unfold during the wedding day are what I love capturing.
My love affair with everything visual began at an early age. I grew up drawing, and was always aware of anything with visual impact, whether it was an amazing painting, or well-designed and conceived architecture. In fact, at one point, I wanted to be an architect. My parents always encouraged my creative side, and I grew up surrounded by the paintings they collected. Because of these influences, when I discovered photography, I became enamored with the medium. It has become a way of life. If I am not taking pictures, you can find me studying the work of the great documentary, street, and contemporary art photographers that have shaped the history of photography and influenced generations of photographers.
Outside of weddings, I work on long term personal documentary projects. Currently I am working on a long term project that explores everyday life in a small city in the state of Indiana, USA. In 2016 I was awarded a grant to continue my work on this project, which I hope to publish as a book.
